Low (2015) by Rick Remender

I've mentioned LOW before but this is a follow up since the series of now over. This series follows the Caine family in the far future, during the last days on Earth. Humanity has migrated underwater to avoid radiation from the sun as it expands, and sent out probes in the search for a new world. I really love the art in this series, and although some parts feel rushed or sloppy the majority of the series looks fantastic. The worldbuilding is nicely done, and as the story progresses gives you more and more of the backstory so it all feels more natural. It feels a little longer than it should be though, and some of the Caine family (Delia especially) feel a little underdeveloped along side of it. I slightly wonder about the main character Stel's motivation for getting humanity off the earth, given the sort of world she's in for this story. But maybe that's glided over with her belief in Quantumology (optimism bends reality) - by propelling humanity to a better place, they'll become better people again. 5/5

Two years ago I picked up a beautiful illustrated comic called Low. This was after I tried Saga and couldn't get into either the story or the art style - Low resonated with me a lot better. Volume 1's foreword from author Rick Remender describes the story being about one woman's eternal optimism as a light in a world of darkness: a futuristic setting where the sun expanded and irradiated the Earth with radiation, the main character's family is either killed or abducted, and every other character is nihilistic and awaiting the end of the world. It's an interesting read, and I've really liked it a lot, but yeah it can be a bit of a downer - with highs and... lows. Volumes 1 and 2 are out, with 3 scheduled in September. 5/5
