Carnaval of Souls (1962)

I'd been meaning to watch Carnival of Souls (1962) for quite some time, because it's come up with a lot of other [horror-related] films I've watched, either as inspiration or something else. My impressions are as follows: The imagery was beautiful (between the general cinematography and the Candace Hilligoss's striking facial features/expressions). The sound in some ways carries the movie, between its ominous organ music or periods of silence. The story is simple enough without digging too deeply, and the actors play their roles to their most memorable.

Overall I really appreciated the film. I generally prefer psychological horror to slashers/gore, and this feels pretty solidly in the former category. There's no gore, little shock, and lots of eerie music. The main character's very off-putting, detached but gets jolts of fear that are either in her head or from craziness in the world around here. I think this is a solid horror that holds its own and ages well. 10/10
