Dune (1984)

23 July 2017

Tonight I watched Dunkirk (2017) at the AFI in 70mm. There are still war films I rate higher than this one (like Paths of Glory and The Bridge on the River Kwai, both from 1957), and time will tell if I consider Dunkirk Nolan's best - better than The Dark Knight, 2008. This film almost feels like an artistic endeavor over a film, with cinematography and sound building the film's rhythm, while the war plot does it's best to disrupt and derail as you go. I have a couple gripes, although minor: the music was great but the dialogue was as times difficult. Also I felt the dialogue could have been a bit more, or a bit less... it felt like the film only wanted talk when necessary, but didn't quite manage it. I really, really like most of Nolan's work, but I still don't think he's reached his peak yet (at least I hope he hasn't). 9/10
