Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

11 November 2019

This evening I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), starring Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, with Kristen Dunst, Elijah Wood, [a very young] Mark Ruffalo, and Tom Wilkinson. It's a movie about a fictional world where you can hire a company to erase someone from your mind, and Carrey wants to do just that coming out of a bad relationship.

In my opinion it's the best Charlie Kaufman film (over Adaptation and Being John Malkovich), but it's also one of the more disheartening ones. It reminds you that relationships are a kaleidoscope of experiences and emotions, and though they may be painful they're a part of your life.

I haven't updated my review since I first saw it on 3/30/2014, giving it a 9/10. At this point in my life it's a 10/10 now: it holds up well after 15 years, it has a good mix of humor and drama, and it captivates the entire time. I won't go watching it again any time soon because for a movie it brings me down quite a bit - but it's an excellent film. 10/10
