When I hear previews that talks about horror movies that are particularly scary, I make note of them to watch them later - partly because I am interested in finding good horror, and partly because I'm interested in finding reviewers that have similar tastes to mine so I can better follow their recommendations. Unfortunately my tastes in horror usually fall with the psychological thrillers, and I've found a majority of reviewers miss the mark for me. I think The Babadook was one of the more recent good recommendations in horror.
Girl on the Third Floor is about a house that judges incoming families, and is probably an allegory about home ownership. Don (CM Punk) arrives at the newly-owned house ahead of his pregnant wife to do some repairs. A strange woman named Sarah (Sarah Brooks) appears at his doorstep, and is interested in helping him out, but proves to be a difficult person for Don to get rid of.
There are some creepy visuals that carry on throughout the film and remind you that it's a horror film when there isn't a lot going on. But the story is kinda weak, and the reason for haunting is even flimsier (it sounded like the house is meant to be more than just another murder-house, but doesn't give that impression for most of the film). The gothic font of the opening credits screams thinking of this as a B-movie though, and it more or less fits firmly in that category, so could be an ok selection for running in the background of a Halloween movie night. 5/10
