Hereditary (2018)

7 March 2019

I heard a lot of good things about Hereditary (2018) and I finally watched it while on the plane out to DC today. I think there were two things that are going against this movie for me: First is the hype - people I know raved about this film, and I think that raised my hopes for it to unreasonable expectations. Second is the explanations within the film - I like films that don't spell out the movie in the end, and I felt like that happened here. Though it's not a huge huge thing, I like the abstraction of a film and prefer to not have the hand-holding.

Otherwise, I generally liked the film. The beginning was slow and a little frustrating because it took a little bit to understand where the movie was going, but when [Event] happens, the characters start to show some really interesting depth (although the plot never seemed to). The cinematography is really interesting but hollow, with a style like an Edward Hopper or David Hockney painting, and that actually sells the visuals pretty well. The interactions between the mother (Toni Collette) and son (Alex Wolff) make this movie better than it is.

8/10 for the craft, though it'l probably settle at 7/10 pretty quick. 7/10
