It (2017)

7 September 2019

I rewatched It (2017) this morning, figuring it'll make seeing chapter two a lot easier to follow (I'd say it did). Rereading my post about it, my opinions haven't changed - honestly it's interesting how my impressions are dead on like my chapter two ones. Streamlined story to a bit of a fault, too many jump scares, and occasional hints that reference the book.

I will say that as a rewatch it was still pretty solid, and although I thought it was heavy on the Pennywise back then, I don't think that to be as much of a fault this time around. Maybe chapter two redeemed him some, or maybe it was that it's been a longer period since I read the novel. Either case, Pennywise although a little more gratuitously placed in the movies, makes sense to be a more major character.

Though after these movies, I'm sick of red balloons.

In 2017 I gave it a 7/10 (thought I rated it higher tbh), and it holds its rating 2 years later. 7/10

I was finally able to watch It (2017) today. Firstly, I don't think it was the best horror film ever - not by a long shot. My general impression is that it's "ok". I read some reviewers saying there was too much Pennywise in it and I tend to agree. Also I would argue the story adjustments they made were really a mixed bag. They easter egged a lot of source material, and I found that about 75% of the changes streamlined the story a lot... but I felt like they declawed the overall story as a result. And tried to replace the raw drug-induced material with heaps of jump-at-you scare tactics (which is such a lame tactic in my opinion).

I'll need to see how the 90s version is before I can make a comparison between the It films. But at the end of the day, I liked this recent version as much as The Dark Tower, and as such it's a 7/10. But I'd also recommend the books over the films. 7/10
