Tonight I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) in 70mm at the local theater, Cinerama in downtown. I missed my chance the first time in theaters, so I was glad they had this movie available (there were others I would've loved to have seen: especially Lawrence of Arabia but the timing didn't work out).
So anyways, Tarantino's ninth film starring DiCaprio and Pitt felt like a labor of love, and at 2h40 it felt it. In a lot of ways it felt like Inglourious Basterds (2009, 8/10), except with a different troupe of actors (though a lot of the recurring actors from Tarantino's last few films made appearances in this one).
The story's undercurrent timeline was a little surprising, and younger audiences may miss it if they don't know their history. But the liberties taken in this movie sort of surprised me. It bounces around a lot and has a lot of patchwork scenes yet it comes together pretty well in the end. Although I enjoyed the film quite a bit, I'm hesitant to give it a higher rating until I see it again. In the theater a guy nearby told me he saw it 7 times! Kinda crazy there, but I could see sitting through it again when it's available on disc, and after I did some more research. 7/10
