Roshomon (1950)

Akira Kurosawa's 88 minute film Rashômon predates Seven Samurai by four years, and one I've been a huge fan of for a long time. Its foundation is that of the nature of truth, and distrusting the reliability of narrators. There have been more modern retellings of this idea: Vantage Point (2008) and The Outrage (2011), but the "rashomon effect" wasn't named after those films.

The film shows its age a little bit, but it's a very minor problem. Originally reviewed back in 2008, it's still a 9/10 to me 8 years later. 9/10
