Sinister (2012)

25 October 2020

I usually go through a few horror movies in October, and here's another one of them. Ethan Hawke stars in this tale about a crime novelist that stumbles upon what could be related serial killings. I stumbled upon this film suggestion from a post calling out some of the "scariest movies ever", and this being the top of the list I thought I'd give it a watch.

I did enjoy this film. The soundtrack and atmosphere are actually really delightful, and its use of CG is fairly subtle and non-distracting. The film itself can be annoyingly dark at times, but I've seen worse in a lot of horror films. The story also builds up really well, as you can see Hawke's character unravel at the same time as the supernatural expands out, which makes it easy to question where the crimes end and the occult begins. It also draws a few parallels to films like The Ring (2002), which the story draws inspiration from. I feel like it could've been a little less drawn out and would've packed an equal punch, and I'm not a fan of the occasional jump scares this film. But in spite of all that it's a solid horror movie, and the atmosphere built over gets top marks. 8/10
