The Lure (Córki dancingu) (2015)

When browsing Barnes and Noble's annual Criterion sale I came across The Lure (2015). Couldn't pass it up based on the description that it was a polish horror comedy musical about mermaids.

If I had to summarize the plot I'd say it was about a mermaid's desire to become human in order to have a happy ending with her human love interest. But it's pretty dark and pretty weird. The song translations certainly make you scratch your head as well. The characters kinda make sense, but it plays out like a musical (which isn't always great at making plots cohesive). And with the weird combination of horror, fantasy, musical, and romance, I don't really know if there exists an audience for this type of film - outside of the folks looking for weird things that made it into the Criterion Collection :P

So if you want to watch something strange, give this a go. The plot doesn't always make sense, but if nothing else it's fascinating to guess what the point of this movie is. 8/10
