Titus (1999)

21 May 2016

This afternoon watched Titus (1999), the tragedy by Shakespeare remade to film with deliberate anachronisms and overdone embellishments to cinematography. It's a decent film, but suffers from a couple issues: it's long at 2h42m, it's not really the most pleasant thing to watch (adult topics are heavy in the movie; roman politics can be dry), and it's lacking in cohesion as it keeps going. That said, the acting keeps it from faltering completely, and (after the first hour) the story keeps itself engaging either through the source material, the anachronisms, or the actors.
It's honestly the way I expected the disappointing MacBeth (2015; 5/10) to turn out: a little overdone cinematically, but with the other parts propping it up from simply being meh. 7/10
