To Joy (1950)

Ingmar Bergman's To Joy (1950) is about a pair of musicians, Stig and Marta, and the life they had with each other. Stig comes across as a pretty lousy human being for most of the film, riding his ego and ambition at the start of the film, and his infidelity and loathing the second half. Alternatively, Marta comes across much more practical and compassionate, and I think that contrast makes some parts of the film really stand out. It's a downer, and at times the music drags scenes out, but otherwise it's a solid drama. 7/10
