Junji Ito is a manga horror writer, probably the most well known for this genre. This film is based on his book of the same name, and while it has some of the same components, was filmed before the story's completion. Visually it's interesting, given that this was before the time CGI became an industry norm, so filming decisions are very much dated by today's standards. However, even with this in mind, and the somewhat flat effect of emotion, the power of the visuals highlight the film - the imagery is simple but gripping and typically disturbing. I'd 100% recommend the book over the film, but it wasn't a complete waste of time. I'd look forward more to the upcoming animation version though. 5/10
